Recently we got to go back to the home we built for the Bennett family in 2015. Their custom colonial was designed to get the maximum square footage for their budget in order to accommodate their growing family, while still having a stylish home. Settled into a beautiful 5-acre wooded lot in Raymond, it’s a starter house that didn't need to sacrifice good design or functionality to stay within budget.
Smart and Creative Design
The open concept first floor combines the kitchen, dining and living space, while having a separate mudroom and half bath by the side entrance. Walking through the front door, you have the farmhouse style kitchen and dining space on your right and the living area on your left.
The kitchen boasts a farmhouse sink with a classic subway tile backsplash. Quartz countertops seamlessly combine with the crisp white cabinets to keep the space bright. The bamboo blinds, rustic table setting, and the framed chalkboard add character and warmth to the space.
The side entrance brings you into a mudroom with space for storage and coat hooks. The half bath has vintage inspired white honeycomb tile and a light gray vanity that complements the paint color, Crisp Linen from Sherwin Williams.
Eco-friendly bamboo flooring with a medium brown stain and paint color Mindful Gray from Sherwin Williams are both consistent through the kitchen into the living area, enhancing the flow between the spaces. Long sheer white curtains help make the windows seem even larger than they are.
The upstairs easily fits two bedrooms for the kids, a master bedroom with his and hers closets, and a full bath. Beige carpet is used throughout the second floor.
Keeping the Cost Down
What’s great about this colonial is that it is built in a way that makes it easy to add a garage and a deck in the future. The homeowners picked many of the design options and fixtures from large home improvement stores, and choose to use rug on the stairs and second floor. All of these things help keep costs low upfront, but don't eliminate the option to expand or make changes further down the road.
Simple and Welcoming
A simple, yet well-designed floor plan combined with smart color and material options make this 1,320 sq. ft. starter home feel spacious and welcoming to be in, and we just love how the Bennett family has decorated and furnished it since!
